The Social Democrats are saddened to hear that illness will prevent Martin McGuinness from contesting the upcoming election in Northern Ireland. Both Catherine Murphy TD & Róisín Shortall TD have wished Mr McGuinness a speedy and full recovery.

Martin McGuinness was a central figure in the peace process and the development of power sharing in Northern Ireland.

He himself travelled a significant journey from paramilitarism to representative politics and was a central figure in moving the IRA towards a permanent ceasefire and power-sharing with unionists.

His leadership as Deputy First Minister, in particular with Dr. Ian Paisley, was a crucial step in creating a politics that could begin to address the urgent social and economic problems that people in Northern Ireland face.
