Statement on the death of Martin McGuinness

March 21, 2017

The Social Democrats are very saddened to hear of the death of Martin McGuinness. Co-leaders Catherine Murphy TD and Róisín Shortall TD express their sympathies to his wife and family, to his colleagues in Sinn Fein and to all of those he represented in Northern Ireland.

Martin McGuinness was a central figure in the peace process and the development of power sharing in Northern Ireland.

He himself travelled a significant journey from paramilitarism to representative politics and was a pivotal figure in moving the IRA towards a permanent ceasefire and power-sharing with unionists.

His leadership as Deputy First Minister, in particular with Dr. Ian Paisley, was a crucial step in creating a politics that could address the urgent social and economic problems that people in Northern Ireland face.
