Heads should roll in Gardaí over latest cock-up

March 23, 2017

Social Democrat co-leader, Róisín Shortall, has said heads should roll over the latest revelation that thousands of traffic convictions are to be cancelled because of Garda error. 14,500 motorists are to have their traffic offences quashed and this comes on top of a finding that the number of drink-driving tests carried out by Gardaí between 2011 and 2016 was exaggerated by almost a million.

Ms. Shortall said, “How many cock-ups does it take for senior Gardaí to face accountability?

The latest revelation raises the most serious questions about the integrity and competence of the Gardaí. We need a police force that the people can trust – but how can we trust the Gardaí when time after time offenders are let off due to Garda error.

The quashing of so many convictions will lead to a massive bill for the tax-payer. The senior Gardaí responsible should be held to account and face the consequences for that.”
