The new housing figures just released by the Government show that there were 7,472 homeless people in Ireland at the end of March. One in three of these are children.
Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said:
“These are depressing figures. They show an increase of 1,500 people who are homeless over last year’s figures.”
“There are crucial infrastructure problems that Minister Coveney is simply not addressing. All the lofty plans are not working and we continue to have a shocking implementation deficit in the Government’s housing plans.”
“Unless there is concerted effort across all of Government to prioritise the housing crisis, we will continue to see homeless figures going in the same upward direction. This is not acceptable. It’s clearly very difficult for those who are homeless. But it is also unacceptable to people all across Ireland who demand more from the Government.”
