Secret Service Underspend Draws Questions Regarding our Intelligence Services

May 29, 2017

Social Democrats TD Catherine Murphy has drawn attention to a PQ reply she received recently regarding the annual underspend on the Irish Secret Service. Deputy Murphy said that at a time when concerns were being raised regarding Ireland’s ability to protect against any potential terrorist attack it seemed strange that year on year the Secret Service was handing back significant amounts of money to the exchequer.

The PQ reply shows that in 2016 alone €309,000 was returned to the Exchequer and in every year back through 2012 there have been significant returns of funding from the Secret Service to the Exchequer.

Catherine Murphy TD said:

“I find it unusual that such large amounts have gone unused by the Secret Service given that we are now hearing talk about an initiative similar to COBRA in the UK being established to deal with is a credible concern regarding terrorist activity and organisation in Ireland.  The PQ reply shows there has been an underspend on intelligence services over the last number of years and I have to ask how wise that is given the current international context.”
