Taoiseach’s meddling in planning for Trump is far from ‘normal politics’

Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy TD today said the Taoiseach has serious questions to answer in relation to his meddling in planning issues related to US President Donald Trump’s golf course in Dooonbeg, Co Clare.

Deputy Murphy said: “The official response to the entirely appropriate criticisms of the Taoiseach’s ill-judged actions as a Government Minister has been to downplay the behaviour as ‘entirely routine’ and ‘normal politics’.

“This statement cannot go unchallenged. The Taoiseach casually mis-used his Ministerial position to meddle in a planning matter at the behest of a wealthy businessman.

“Trying to pass this off as ‘normal politics’ sounds like a throw-back to another era. We are supposed to have moved on from the days of political meddling in planning, but Mr Varadkar’s behaviour would call that into question.

“It would be entirely inappropriate for a Government Minister to have involved himself in a planning decision of Clare County Council on behalf of a private individual. The Taoiseach must come before the Dáil to give a full and detailed explanation of his actions.”
