Responding to reports today that two Dublin schools have been shut down after structural problems were discovered in the buildings, Social Democrats Councillor Cian O’Callaghan said:
“The Department of Education has been aware that there is a serious fire safety problem in several schools since fire inspection reports were carried out in 2016.
“Fire safety issues with schools built by Western Building Systems were first flagged three years ago at Rush-Lusk Educate Together primary school.
“There is no excuse for the inaction by the Department – there should have been immediate inspection and audits of all similar schools that were built by Western Building Systems at that time.
“Minister Richard Bruton TD who was the Minister for Education over this time must answer questions as to why he failed to put the safety of our children first and failed to take action to ensure that a complete audit of the problem was carried out in an urgent fashion.”
