Viktor Orbán’s latest attempt to dehumanise members of the queer community in Hungary by banning Pride events is a blatant violation of their human rights, according to the Social Democrats.
Pádraig Rice TD, the party’s Health spokesperson, said:
“The decision to ban Pride in Hungary is a full-frontal attack on LGBTQ+ human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“It’s a violation of the right to self-expression, peaceful assembly and right to be free from discrimination.
“It stands in sharp contrast to the core European values of human dignity, democracy and equality.
“This action is just the latest in a long list of attacks on LGBTQ+ people in Hungary.
“The Irish Government must stand strong in defence of our shared European values.
“The Taoiseach must raise this issue at this week’s European Council meeting and the European Commission must initiate infringement proceedings against Hungary for violation of the EU treaties.
“This attack on human rights cannot be tolerated.”
Sinéad Gibney TD, the party’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, said:
“This is not only an attack on the rights of LGBTQ+ people celebrating who they are, but an exploitation of technology to facilitate an authoritarian crackdown.
“Facial recognition must be strictly regulated precisely because it’s so easy to weaponise.
“The idea that Pride would be banned in an EU member state while its government uses technologies to persecute attendees is terrifying.
“Ireland must provide a stronger voice in opposing fascistic actions like these, particularly in the EU.
“If Hungary proceeds to violate basic human rights in this fashion, it must be met with consequences at an EU level.”
Gary Gannon TD, the party’s Justice spokesperson, said:
“Hungary’s legislation serves as a stark reminder that LGBTQ+ rights are far from guaranteed, even in the EU.
“It’s terrifying to see such hate from Victor Orbán’s government – we cannot afford to remain silent while innocent people suffer at the hands of far-right states.
“This is not just a matter of policy – it’s a human rights issue.
“We must reject this hate to ensure that every person is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
