General Secretary

The Social Democrats are hiring a General Secretary to help lead the growth and development of the Party. This person will head-up the Party’s head office secretariat, and will have overall responsibility for organisational development, policy development, communications and administration. The successful candidate will report to the Party’s Executive Committee, and will work day-to-day with the leadership team.

About the Social Democrats and the Role

The Social Democrats are a new Party and our immediate focus is on building a mainstream, progressive, social democratic force in Irish politics. As a senior member of our small but dedicated team, the General Secretary will play a central role in realising that aim by overseeing and driving the party’s day-to-day functioning and pursuing our longer-term strategic aims.

The ideal candidate will have strong political instincts and know-how, and will have a strong track record of leadership in a political, business, legislative or civil society context. Qualifications and Skills

  • Advanced university degree in a relevant discipline or a relevant professional qualification. Candidates demonstrating equivalent professional experience or a combination of equivalent experience and undergraduate qualification may also be considered;
  • A minimum of five years’ management experience (e.g., political, governmental, business, civil society), ideally with experience of leading the growth of an organisation;
  • Experience of recruiting, training and managing staff;
  • A thorough knowledge of the Irish national political context and a keen interest in current affairs;
  • A strong understanding of the Irish electoral system;
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively within a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills;
  • Strong leadership skills with an ability to drive organisational development;
  • A passion for our vision of social democratic politics and dedication to seeing it realised;
  • Highly organised, capable of working to competing deadlines and responding efficiently and effectively to competing priorities;
  • A flexible approach to the hours and days of work. Due to the nature of the work involved, working hours can be unpredictable and subject to change.


Responsibilities Included

The General Secretary will be Head of Operations for the Social Democrats. The successful candidate will manage our senior team including staff engaged in policy development, organisational development, communications and administration. They will report formally to the Executive Committee, and will work with the leadership team on a day-to-day basis. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing an effective Head Office that strongly supports the Party membership, the Executive Committee, elected representatives and our network of branches;
  • Overseeing the day-to-day running of the Party’s head office;
  • Managing the secretariat team, including organisational development, policy development, communications and administration;
  • Managing the recruitment, training and day-to-day work of volunteers, as required;
  • Planning and overseeing key party events, including regional and national conferences;
  • Managing the human resources function of Party Secretariat;
  • Managing regulatory and statutory reporting, including but not limited to ensuring reporting and compliance obligations to bodies such as the Standards in Public Office Commission (SIPO), Data Protection Commissioner and Revenue Commissioners are met;
  • Overseeing administrative and financial operations of the Party;
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of a fundraising strategy;
  • Representing the Party in the media and at key events, as required;
  • Providing regular management reports to the Leadership team and the Executive Committee;
  • Carrying out other duties as may be determined from time to time.


Basic Conditions of Employment

  • Salary circa €75,000 per annum;
  • The General Secretary will be a non-voting member of the Executive Committee;
  • This is a fixed term appointment that expires two months after the next General Election. At that point the contract may be renewed at the discretion of the Executive Committee;
  • The appointment of the General Secretary will be made by the Executive Committee of the party;
  • The position will be based in Dublin and may entail some travel throughout the country as required;
  • Significant flexibility will be required in relation to working days and times;
  • Pay and other conditions will be set at a level commensurate with qualifications and experience.
