Job Description – Social Media and Internal Communications Officer

The Social Democrats are seeking a vibrant and ambitious person to be our social media communications and campaigns officer. The right person will be creative and innovative in driving our social media presence, broadening our online reach and developing and monitoring online campaigns that promote active engagement with the Party and the values, ideals and approaches that we stand for. You will also support greater communication and engagement amongst our growing Party membership.

About the Social Democrats and the Role

Our focus in the Social Democrats, as a new political party, is on building a mainstream, progressive, social democratic force in Irish politics. As a member of our small but dedicated team, you will work directly with the Communications Director and play a key role in realising that aim. You will be responsible for managing and developing our social media platforms and rolling out online campaigns that focus on growing the profile and reach of the party, nationally and locally.

 Qualifications and Skills

  • You will have good experience in the use of social media, including in a campaigning context, and will be able to demonstrate a string of successes in building the reach and impact across social media of ideas, brands or campaigns;
  • You will have a proven track record of creating innovative content for social media platforms and will be very comfortable running social communities across Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels;
  • You will be proficient and creative in creating social media content, including video, and ideally you will have a working knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign and video editing;
  • You will have a qualification in online journalism, social media or digital marketing and will have a minimum of two years social media communications experience.
  • A good knowledge of the Irish national political context and a keen interest in current affairs is desirable, along with a passion for social democratic politics;
  • Strong writing skills with an ability to tailor the tone, content and form of written output in line with the intended audience;
  • Demonstrable ability to produce high-quality output within a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, and success in working in teams;
  • A flexible approach to the hours and days of work. Due to the nature of the work involved, working hours can be unpredictable and subject to change.

Job Duties:

  • Manage social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and other relevant platforms
  • Plan, create and implement online content and campaigns to support our strategic communication goals with a comprehensive and tailored approach that brings together different digital strands;
  • Use social media to promote the work of the parliamentary party and our legislative work, and to promote party policies and positions;
  • Support the development of a vibrant online presence of our elected representatives, candidates and local area representatives;
  • Support communications with and between party members and supporters, including through regular ezines, blogs and other channels;
  • Manage our website and website content and ensure it is accurate, relevant and timely;
  • Optimise our web content using SEO and monitor our presence on social media through social and google analytics, including the success and reach of online campaigns;
  • Create dynamic written, graphic and video content for our social media channels;
  • Promote party events, seminars and conferences and help with event management;
  • Identify the suitability of different platforms and create content that promotes the reach of the Social Democrats and audience interaction;
  • Work with other staff and party members, including policy, fundraising and branch organisation teams to coordinate campaigns with social media strategy;
  • Support the development of vibrant branch online communications, providing guidelines, training and content to branch officers and party members;
  • Support the Communications Director across all aspects of communications;
  • Related administrative and other duties;

 Conditions of Employment

  • This is a full time, fixed term appointment that expires one month after the next General Election. At that point the contract may be renewed at the discretion of the National Executive;
  • The position will be based in Dublin and will entail travel throughout the country as required;
  • Flexibility will be required in relation to working days and times;
  • Pay is set at a rate equivalent to a Secretarial Assistant within the Oireachtas, and starts at €23k, with 21 days holidays.
