The legacy of this government will be a broken, dysfunctional housing system

Confirmation that house prices are continuing their relentless increase is a further reminder of what’s at stake in this general election, according to Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O’Callaghan.

“The CSO has today confirmed that we are continuing to see double digit increases in house prices – up 10pc across the country in the past year.

“In Fingal, in north county Dublin – the Housing Minister’s own constituency – house prices have increased by nearly 14 percent in the past year alone.

“This will be the legacy of this government. A broken, dysfunctional housing system which has resulted in tens of thousands of people despairing of ever being able to own their own home.

“We have now had 14 years of Fine Gael-led governments, propped up – in either confidence and supply or coalition – by Fianna Fáil for most of that time.

“If Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil had the solutions to the housing disaster, they would have implemented them by now.

“Their approach is tied, tested and failed. Worse, they won’t accept the mountains of evidence that their management of housing has been an utter disaster.

“Today’s CSO report is further evidence of what is at stake in this election. We need a radical reset on housing and only a new government, which includes the Social Democrats, can deliver that.”
