Reported breaches of building regulations in one of the State’s largest affordable housing schemes raises serious questions for the developer and Dublin City Council, according to Social Democrats TD Rory Hearne.

Deputy Hearne, who represents Dublin North-West, said:

“It is deeply concerning to learn that delivery of homes at Oscar Traynor Woods could be delayed after a number of non-compliance issues were identified during inspections by the council. It is not yet clear how any necessary remedial works to rectify the defects will impact on the timeline for completion of these homes.

“This project, which will see more than 850 homes built by a private developer on what was council-owned land, has been flawed from the outset.

“While presented by the previous government as their flagship affordable housing scheme, Oscar Traynor Woods has turned out to be anything but affordable, with some three-bed homes costing as much as €475,000.

“Given the exorbitant prices being sought for these homes, it is completely unacceptable that issues with building regulation compliance should now arise.

“In this country, we know all too well the human toll and financial hardship caused by the thousands of defective homes built during the Celtic Tiger years. We cannot afford to go down that road again.

“Given the significant public interest at stake, developer Glenveagh and Dublin City Council must now outline the full extent of works required to bring any defective properties into full compliance with building regulations and clarify how this will impact on the delivery of these homes.”
