Social Democrats councillor Nuala Killeen has established that €1.72m remains in the kitty for the North Kildare Swimming Pool project.
Cllr Killeen recently asked Kildare County Council to detail the funding accrued for the North Kildare swimming pool over the last 20 years, through development contributions, contributions by the Celbridge-Leixlip MD, and former town councils – and asked what the funds had been spent on.
She was informed that the fund received €725,000 apiece from the old Celbridge and Clane Areas; €650,000 from the old Leixlip area; and a capital transfer of €300,000.
Of the total, €668,000 has been spent in three phases on the Leixlip Amenities Group.
In response to a question from Cllr Killeen, Kildare County Council confirmed that there is a balance of €1,732,000 remaining on the capital code in the Community and Cultural Development Department.
Commenting, Cllr Killeen said:
“The intention for many years was that the swimming pool would be sited at the Leixlip Amenities Centre. It was only at the time of the proposed application for funding for a site in Maynooth was that it was renamed the Kildare North site. It is not a good outcome that no other money has been spent from this fund on cultural and community projects in the last 20 years.”
