Meet John

I’m John Hurley, the Social Democrats Councillor for Stillorgan, which stretches from Milltown to Carrickmines.

I live in Stillorgan with my wife and teenage sons and work in the tech sector.

Over the past number of years, I have been involved with a variety of community organisations including; Oatlands Primary school parents council, Lakelands FC, my residents association and have recently founded a Tidy Towns Group in Stillorgan.

I am a community volunteer with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and at weekends I volunteer at the NCBI (now Vision Ireland) shop in Dún Laoghaire.

During the pandemic, I organized the collection, refurbishment, donation and publicity of the Social Democrats #LaptopsForKids campaign, which provided almost 200 laptops to DEIS schools in the area.

I care passionately about the provision of public housing, services and amenities and their impact on social cohesion.

Stillorgan is a great place to live but I know it could be even better. I have ambitions for Stillorgan and I want DLR County Council to have ambitious plans for Stillorgan too, beyond the provision of apartments, retail, car parks and cycle lanes.

I want to work with Council Planners to incentivize the provision of public sports and leisure and arts facilities along with private housing developments.
Public spaces and amenities that are conducive to congregation, recreation and the arts help people to engage in active inclusive and cohesive communities.
Otherwise, we’re all just residents. Is ar scáth a chéile a mharainn na Daoine!

John’s Priorities

• Fighting for the provision of affordable housing in our areas.
• Transformation and maintenance of the built environment in village centres to promote active human movement and engagement.
• Ensuring that the less able and less privileged in society are fully considered in the planning of all projects.
• Ensuring that climate and waste-management policies are based on efficiency, transparency and sustainability.
• Proper planned investment in and around schools to support growing communities.
