Social Democrats co-leader Róisín Shortall TD today accused the government of failing to get to grips with ticket touting when she raised the issue in the Dáil this morning.
Deputy Shortall said:
“This year’s summer concert season is already in full swing and the public are being ripped off on a daily basis by unscrupulous ticket touts who are making massive profits by reselling tickets that they are buying online in bulk.
“Instead of introducing legislation to protect consumers by outlawing this outrageous practice, the government is sitting back and letting it continue. In fact, it seems to view this consumer rip-off as some kind of spectator sport.
“In spite of many promises to deal with touting of concert and match tickets, it’s clear that the Government has been dragging its heels and has done nothing about this scandal.
“Despite a public consultation and strong cross-party support for legislation, there’s no sense of urgency from the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation. It’s about time the government grasped the nettle and introduced legislation to put an end to these unscrupulous rip-offs.”
