The Social Democrats tonight welcomed the passage through the Oireachtas of the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2018.
Speaking as the Seanad voted in support of the legislation, the party’s co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said:
“This is a hugely significant and very welcome journey towards State provision of safe and legal healthcare for women and girls in our country. The passage through the Oireachtas of this Bill means that thousands of women will no longer be forced to travel abroad for the compassionate healthcare denied them at home, or self-administer abortion pills in unsafe conditions.
“Tonight’s events cap off the resounding success of this year’s Repeal referendum campaign, which was transformative in tackling the secrecy and stigma around issues that women have had to endure in our society for far too long. Thirty-five years after the Eighth Amendment was introduced, we are finally emerging into a compassionate and progressive Ireland.
“As Social Democrats, we know there is much more to be done to build a modern secular republic that prioritises the welfare of citizens in all our laws and services on the basis of equality and fairness.”
