New figures published by the Central Statistics Office expose the Government’s spin on housing for what it is, according to Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan.
Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s spokesperson on housing, said:
“According to the CSO, there were 6,884 new dwelling completions in the second quarter of this year – a fall of 5.4 per cent on the same three months of 2023.
“Apartment completions fell by a worrying 15.1 per cent during the same period.
“These figures expose the spin behind the Minister for Housing’s constant praise of the rising number of commencement notices.
“The fact of the matter is people can not live in a commencement notice and the actual number of homes being built is falling when we need it to be rising.
“This Government has made it clear that they are incapable of tackling the housing crisis. Rents, house prices, and the number of people in homeless accommodation have all reached previously unimaginable heights.
“The general election cannot come soon enough.”
