The Government must immediately outline what action it intends to take following reports that arms shipments destined for Israel flew through Irish airspace, according to Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon.

Deputy Gannon, who is the party’s spokesperson on defence, said:

“The revelations in the Ditch that an Israel-bound cargo plane travelling from the United States used Irish airspace to transport ammunition are extremely serious and must be fully investigated.

“Given that no consent was sought and no exemptions were granted for such flights by the Government, this appears to be a clear breach of Irish law, for which there must be consequences.

“Ireland is obligated to use every means at our disposal to halt the genocide being inflicted upon the Gazan population by Israel.

“Turning a blind eye to weapons of slaughter being transported through Irish sovereign airspace would make us complicit in the daily atrocities being carried out against the Palestinian people.

“There is little point having laws in place if they are not enforced. The Government must use all possible legal measures open to them in response to this serious breach of Irish law.”
