The Social Democrats today expressed deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the late barrister and political commentator, Noel Whelan.
The party’s co-leaders Róisín Shortall TD and Catherine Murphy TD said:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of Noel’s death. Noel was a passionate campaigner, a talented barrister and a discerning political commentator who had an unrivalled knowledge and understanding of electoral politics.
“Noel played a central role in the successful referendum campaigns to introduce same-sex marriage and repeal the Eighth Amendment. His activism, generosity, talent and personality will be deeply missed by all of us in public life striving for a more compassionate and fairer Ireland.
“We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Noel’s wife Sinéad, young son Séamus and the rest of their family at this most difficult time.”
