The Social Democrats have selected Councillor Gary Gannon to represent the party in the Dublin constituency for the upcoming election to the European Parliament.
Party members selected Councillor Gannon at a convention in Dublin city this evening. Gary has been a Dublin City councillor since 2014.
May’s European elections are the first that the Social Democrats, founded in 2015, will contest. In his speech to delegates, Cllr Gannon said:
“The EU parliament is the most important place politically in the world right now. I am delighted to have been selected tonight to represent the party in this critically important election. What Dublin needs is a voice that represents the diversity of our city and its people. I know that the Social Democrats can be that voice at the European table.”
The party’s chair, Peter Tanham who mc’d tonight’s selection convention said:
“The Social Democrats is a party of European ideas and ideals. This contest is a landmark on the path of our party’s growth. We had the pleasure of choosing from two great candidates and now have Gary Gannon going forward to represent Dublin in Europe, and to help make Dublin a truly European and social democratic city. We look forward to a vibrant and exciting campaign in the coming weeks.”
