The Social Democrats are pleased to announce that Cork County Councillor June Murphy has joined the party.
Ms Murphy (43) is a native of Mitchelstown. She was first elected in 2014 to Cork County Council representing the people of the Fermoy Municipal District.
Announcing the move, the party’s co-leaders Róisín Shortall TD and Catherine Murphy TD said:
“We’re delighted to welcome June to the Social Democrats. She has been an energetic campaigner for community issues including mental health services, suicide prevention, domestic violence and sexual abuse, and the needs of children with physical or intellectual disabilities and their families.
“June brings great experience and commitment to the party, and is joining a thriving team of representatives in Cork city and county. Along with our party colleagues, we very much look forward to working with June to grow the Social Democrats movement as a dynamic force for change in Irish society.”
Commenting on the move, Councillor Murphy said:
“It means a lot for me to join a political party that is so fresh and is standing up for improved public services and principled politics. The party has a clear vision for a fairer and more decent Ireland and I am inspired by the passion and integrity of its co-leaders Róisín Shortall TD and Catherine Murphy TD. It is a very solutions-focused party intent on improving people’s lives in relation to issues like social and affordable housing, healthcare and education.”
Councillor Murphy added:
“I am involved in representative politics to make a difference when it comes to local issues that I hold dear to my heart I know that working alongside the Social Democrats this work will go from strength to strength.”
Ms Murphy joins a growing team of Social Democrats representatives in Cork city and county. These include her colleague Cork County Councillor Joe Harris from Douglas; general election candidates Patricia Dwyer (Cork South Central), Sinéad Halpin (Cork North Central), Ciarán McCarthy (Cork North West); and local area representative for Cobh Ken Curtin.
Councillor Joe Harris said: “I am very much looking forward to working alongside June in Cork County Council to advance the kind of policies we need in our local community. June is an incredibly hard-working public representative for people in her electoral area. She is a very strong addition to the party in Cork.”
With Cllr Murphy joining the party, the Social Democrats now have seven elected councillors representing areas of Dublin City, South Dublin, as well as Fingal, Wicklow, and Cork.
The party, founded in June 2015, is currently organised in 30 constituencies.
