Social Democrats co-leader Róisín Shortall TD today called on the Minister for Health to intervene to compel the HSE to release smear slides to women affected by the CervicalCheck controversy so they can be independently reviewed.
“It is totally shocking that the government is presiding over a situation where our carbon emissions are actually going up at a rate of 2 million tonnes a year, instead of falling by the required 1 million tonnes”.
Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said the government needs to show real urgency in tackling climate change following today’s damning report by the Sate watchdog, the Climate Change Advisory Council.
Deputy Murphy said:
“It is totally shocking that the government is presiding over a situation where our carbon emissions are actually going up at a rate of 2 million tonnes a year, instead of falling by the required 1 million tonnes.
“The country is going backwards on our climate targets to such an extent that you’d have to wonder if there’s anyone in charge at all. The government’s complacency over the pace of transition to a low carbon economy and society is just breath-taking – and it’s ordinary people who will be saddled with the costs for this into the future.
“Ireland is already facing EU fines for non-compliance with our environmental targets to the tune of €600 million a year from 2021. The government needs to cop itself on and face up to the challenges with the urgency that is needed. It should start by setting out a clear road map for decarbonisation of the economy and society by 2050, and then act decisively to make this happen.”
