The latest report from myhome.ie is further proof that the Government is unable or unwilling to bring down the cost of buying a home, according to Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan.
Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s housing spokesperson, said:
“The findings of the Q2 2024 MyHome.ie Property Price Report will come as little surprise to first-time buyers.
“The median asking price for a home is now €365,000, representing a 7.3 per cent increase on the same period last year. This rises to a staggering €465,000 in Dublin.
“The report also found that the number of new homes coming on the market, the number of homes sold, and the overall number of homes listed on the website were all down significantly on the previous year.
“All this paints a worrying picture for people looking to get a place of their own who are watching the dream of homeownership get further away every day.
“House prices have continuously skyrocketed under this Government.
“When the Social Democrats propose solutions to address this, such as an affordable housing zoning, the Government doesn’t hesitate to vote them down.
“The Housing Commission also identified a number of key recommendations to tackle the housing crisis. The Government set up the commission themselves for this very purpose. It is unacceptable that they now ignore the findings of the report.
“While it may suit developers, speculators and vulture funds to have house prices rise indefinitely, it certainly does not help first-time buyers.
“As the Government approach the end of their term, it’s becoming increasingly clear that they are either unable or unwilling to bring down the cost of buying a home.”
