Taoiseach-in-waiting Simon Harris must step up, where his predecessors have failed, and immediately introduce a ban on no-fault eviction
Levels of homelessness have exploded under the watch of this calamitous government – who seem more interested in jockeying for power than solving the housing disaster, according to Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan.
“There are now 13,841 people living in homeless emergency accommodation – the highest number in the history of the State. Tragically, 4,170 of these are children, representing a 57 per cent rise since this Government took charge.
“In Dublin, where house prices and rents are highest, the situation is especially dire. Homeless figures in the capital have breached 10,000 for the first time, meaning more than 70pc of everyone who is homeless lives in Dublin.
“This calamitous Government is nearly four years in office and is now moving onto its third Taoiseach. Throughout their tenure, they have managed to turn a housing crisis into a housing disaster with an additional 5,142 people becoming homeless since 2020.
“We simply cannot, and must not, accept this appalling level of homelessness. Action is needed now to protect people from the trauma of losing their home.
“Taoiseach-in-waiting Simon Harris must step up, where his predecessors have failed, and immediately introduce a ban on no-fault evictions.
“There is no acceptable level of homelessness. This is not a government that is short on funds to tackle the crisis. Ensuring that every child grows up with a home should be the bare minimum for the new Taoiseach.”
