I’m Danny Alvey, the Social Democrats Councillor for Wicklow.
I am a Wicklow town native and have lived in Newtownmountkennedy for the past four years with my young family. I have first-hand experience of the need for more housing, schools, childcare and sports facilities for the town’s growing population. It was one of the reasons why I am put myself forward for election.
I volunteer with the Newtown Tidy Towns, where I am currently vice-chairperson. I am also very passionate about biodiversity and climate change which led me to co-found the community group ReWild Wicklow in 2021. I am the chairperson of this new environmental charity which already has over 1,200 volunteers. Together we have helped on over 25 different nature restoration projects across the county including tree planting, peatland rewetting and pond digging.
In my professional life, I work in fundraising for Ireland’s largest poverty charity and travel the country interviewing people who struggle to make ends meet. I’ve no doubt these experiences will make me a strong advocate on their behalf.
I am getting into politics for my children and family. I want to pass onto them a planet and society in better condition than the one my generation has inherited. We have the solutions for this, we just need the passion and commitment to make it happen.
