Renters have been abandoned by the outgoing Government, according to Social Democrats housing spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan.
“The Daft.ie Rental Price Report for Q3 2024 has revealed that rents grew by over 7.2 per cent in the last year alone.
“The average monthly rent in Ireland is now €1,955. That is a staggering €23,460 a year and 91 per cent of the salary of a minimum wage worker.
“Under this Government, renters are expected to work their lives away just to hand the majority of their wages over to their landlord – if they are lucky enough to find a place to live.
“It is not good enough and it does not have to be this way.
“The Social Democrats recently published a fully costed affordable housing plan that would deliver 75,000 genuinely affordable homes over the next five years.
“This will give people a chance to move on from the private rental sector into a secure home where they can put down roots and spend more of their hard-earned money on things that matter to them.
“Renters have been left behind for far too long by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. They will not forget this on election day.”
