Dublin North-West general election candidate for the Social Democrats, Rory Hearne, is not just running for a Dáil seat – he’s also running in support of Palestine in this weekend’s Dublin Marathon.
This will be the seasoned runner’s eighth time to participate in the marathon, which takes place this Sunday, October 27. In the most recent two events in 2022 and 2023, the housing campaigner, author and lecturer raised over €3,000 for homelessness charity De Paul.
This weekend, he will be raising funds and awareness for Dignity for Palestinians, an independent, voluntary and politically unaffiliated organisation. The group works with thousands of internally displaced people in Gaza City and northern Gaza who are staying in UNRWA shelters and tent cities.
Dr Hearne said:
“It is important that the world does not become desensitised to the ongoing genocide unfolding in Gaza. One year on from the start of this brutal conflict, more than 42,000 people, many of them women and children, have been killed at the hands of Israeli armed forces, with thousands more injured, displaced and facing starvation.
“While Ireland has been strong in its condemnation of Israel’s atrocities, the Government has so far failed to take any meaningful action, including the imposition of economic sanctions or enactment of the Occupied Territories Bill.
“I have chosen to raise funds for Dignity for Palestinians in this year’s Irish Life Dublin Marathon as a show of solidarity with the people of Gaza, who continue to be subjected to unspeakable war crimes by Israel on a daily basis.”
