Róisín Shortall TD, the Social Democrats Co-Leader, has called for Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to urgently correct the Dáil Record in light of this evening’s revelations regarding Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald’s knowledge of the legal strategy on the Garda McCabe case at the O’Higgins Commission.
Róisín Shortall said:
“The revelations this evening are deeply disturbing and it is vital that the Taoiseach takes the earliest opportunity when the Dáil resumes tomorrow to set the record straight on some crucial questions. We need to know exactly who knew what and when.”
“The legal strategy which was deployed essentially involved numbers of senior Gardaí perjuring themselves in order to further denigrate whistleblower Sargent McCabe. If the Tanáiste was privy to the detail of such a strategy we need to know what actions she took based on that knowledge and when she took action, if any.”
“If anyone in the Department or the Cabinet was aware that a legal strategy was in place which directly sought to damage the reputation of a whistleblower then that is clearly an issue of the gravest nature and both the Taoiseach and Tanáiste have a duty to set the record straight urgently.”
