Dire warnings that as few as 25,000 homes might only be delivered this year are further proof that the housing crisis is spiralling out of control, according to Social Democrats TD Rory Hearne.

Deputy Hearne, who is the party’s housing spokesperson, said:

“This government is following in the footsteps of its predecessor by coming out with outlandish house building projections, despite worrying indications of a downward trend in completions for 2025.

“At this week’s Construction Industry Federation/Irish Home Builders’ Association Summit, representatives from Sherry Fitzgerald warned that, in their view, just 25,000 homes would be delivered this year.

“This comes in the same week that the Cabinet approved the revised National Planning Framework, which includes targets of 50,000 homes to be built every year.

“It is impossible to have faith in any targets set by a government dominated by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, who cynically misled voters in the run up to the general election with unfounded predictions that 40,000 homes would be completed last year – a fictional figure they undershot by almost 10,000.

“At the current rate of delivery, there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that the programme for government commitment to build 300,000 homes between now and 2030 will be met.”
