Social Democrats health spokesperson Róisín Shortall has questioned why the Health Minister’s review of urgent and emergency care capacity in the mid-west is only happening now.
“This latest development has all the signs of a political stunt.
“A second ED has been needed in the mid-west for years. Why has the Minister only started listening to campaigners now?
“The UL Hospital Group is the only hospital group in the country without a model three hospital. In fact, five hospital groups have at least three model three hospitals.
“It’s quite clear from the years of overcrowding in UHL that reconfiguring services without a model three hospital was a seriously flawed decision.
“The new consultant contract, which is attracting a lot of new consultants, provides a real opportunity to staff a second ED in Ennis or Nenagh.”
