Holly Cairns TD, Social Democrats spokesperson for Agriculture and the Marine, has highlighted concerns about larger fishing vessels operating in-shore on Irish coastal waters.
Holly said:
“Last week, the High Court overturned a 2019 Policy Directive which excluded trawling by fishing vessels over 18 metres from inshore waters inside the six nautical mile zone.
“The law banning trawling by large vessels in coastal waters was designed to ensure sustainable fishing and to protect the livelihoods of small-scale and island fishermen who rely on inshore fishing.
“The High Court ruling overturning this law has created confusion and uncertainty in the sector, as well as causing ongoing damage to fish stocks. We need a balanced approach to this issue which preserves fish stocks and supports the hundreds of families depending on small-scale fishing. It also helps sea angling and tourism sectors.
“In the past few days I have been receiving reports of large trawlers in Bantry Bay from locals concerned about the impact of this type of fishing on local enterprises and the ecology in the area. There are also worrying issues relating to fishing in special areas of conservation.
“I have asked the Minister for Agriculture and the Marine to immediately address this issue in light of the court ruling. I am also calling on all stakeholders to act responsibly and adhere to sustainable practices, regardless of official rules.”
